Short answer

What does each option actually do?

These two parts get compared constantly, but they solve different problems. Being clear about that is the whole decision.

A catalytic converter is an emissions device. Hot exhaust gas passes over a coated ceramic substrate, and the coating converts carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen into less harmful gases. A side effect of that chemistry is that the catalyst stores and releases oxygen. That is what the downstream oxygen sensor measures. Replacing a worn cat restores both the chemistry and the sensor behaviour.

An O₂ sensor spacer is a diagnostic and motorsport part. It threads into the downstream sensor bung and holds the sensor back out of the direct exhaust stream, in a small chamber with a miniature catalyst element in it. The gas the sensor samples is damped and delayed, so the downstream trace flattens out again and the catalyst efficiency monitor stops setting a fault.

Say the consequence out loud, because it matters: a spacer changes what the sensor reports. It does not repair a catalytic converter and it does not reduce tailpipe emissions. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

Choose a new catalytic converter if…

  • The car is a daily driver that has to pass roadworthy, or you are selling it and the buyer will have it tested.
  • You have confirmed the catalyst itself is the problem — a genuine P0420 with no exhaust leak, healthy oxygen sensors and no misfire.
  • The cat is rattling, glowing, or restricting flow. A collapsed substrate is a running problem, not just a warning light, and no spacer fixes a blocked exhaust.
  • The catalyst was poisoned by burnt oil or coolant. If you fix the leak but leave the contaminated cat in, the code comes straight back.
  • You simply want the car to be right. That is a legitimate reason on its own.

A spacer may be worth trying if…

  • The only symptom is the light. The car drives normally, uses normal fuel and passes everything else.
  • You have already ruled out the cheap causes and the code is a borderline efficiency reading rather than a dead cat.
  • The vehicle is used off-road, on track, or for a purpose where emissions compliance is not the governing requirement.
  • You need the dash clear temporarily so a second, unrelated fault code is not buried behind a permanent light.
  • You want a reversible, R199 experiment before committing to a repair that costs many multiples of that. Fitting a spacer does not stop you buying a cat later.

Do neither yet if…

This is the section most comparison pages skip, and it is the one that saves people money.

You have an exhaust leak upstream of the downstream sensor. A cracked manifold, a blown flange gasket or a rusted-through pipe lets fresh air into the stream. The downstream sensor reads that extra oxygen and the ECU concludes the catalyst has stopped storing oxygen. Fitting a spacer hides the code while the leak keeps going. Fitting a new cat wastes the part. Find the leak first — a cold-start listen, or a smoke test at a workshop.

The engine is misfiring. A misfire dumps unburnt fuel into the exhaust and cooks the catalyst. If you have any P030x codes, rough idle, or a coil pack you have been ignoring, fix that before spending anything on the exhaust. A new cat fitted behind a misfiring cylinder is money set on fire.

The oxygen sensor itself is lazy. Downstream sensors age. A slow or drifting sensor produces exactly the kind of trace that trips the catalyst monitor. Look at live data: watch both sensors during a steady cruise and see whether the rear one is genuinely mirroring the front, or just reporting sluggishly. A sensor is cheaper than a cat.

You are burning oil or coolant. Sort the engine before the exhaust, every time.

What about a high-flow cat as a middle option?

A high-flow catalytic converter is a real catalyst with a lower cell density and less restriction. It sits honestly between the two options above: it still does emissions work, it usually costs less than an original-equipment part, and on modified cars it is the sensible compromise.

The catch is the same reduced cell density that makes it flow. Less substrate means less oxygen storage, and on some vehicles that is not enough to keep the downstream sensor trace flat. People fit a high-flow cat, the light comes back, and they end up looking at a spacer anyway. If you go this route, buy the largest-volume unit that will physically fit, and expect that some cars will still need help with the monitor. Is a used or scrapyard catalytic converter worth it?

On paper it is the cheap way to get a real cat. In practice, treat it with caution.

You cannot see substrate condition from the outside. A used unit may look perfect and already be half-poisoned by the oil the previous engine was burning — which is quite often exactly why it came off the car. There is no way to test it before fitting, and once it is welded in, you own the result.

There is also the South African context. Catalytic converter theft is common enough here that the second-hand market for cats is genuinely fraught, and the pricing on some listings reflects a supply chain nobody wants to describe. If you buy used, buy from an established dealer who invoices you with the part identified, not from an anonymous listing with a boot-full of cut-off units. A cheap cat that lands you explaining yourself is not cheap.

No. A spacer recesses the downstream oxygen sensor out of the direct exhaust stream so its signal flattens and the catalyst monitor stops setting a fault. Will a spacer clear a P0420 on a completely dead catalytic converter?
